I have been coming to the Studio on the Hill for 15 years. Sister Helen has been incredibly supportive of my endeavours in the studio and outside as well. — a student

Michelle, a Studio on the Hill student and volunteerA Studio on the Hill Story

When I am working at Studio on the Hill, I enjoy open space, friendship, community and inspiration. — Michelle, student & volunteer

Fifteen years ago, Michelle had an unfulfilled passion to create pottery through working with clay, and her research eventually brought her to Studio on the Hill. “I wanted to make bowls, but when I saw the sculptures of human figures there, I knew that was for me.”

Michelle also studied Korean martial arts, and married her two interests. Every time Michelle attained a new belt or level in Taekwondo, she made a new sculpture! Eventually, Michelle showcased her creations at her own sculpture show.

“The studio is a great place to meet people, and I’ve made lifelong friends here. It’s also a place just to come and sit quietly and be inspired.” This past fiscal year, it was evident that many people shared Michelle’s enjoyment of the Studio, as overall visits increased in almost every category.

How Studio on the Hill Came to Be

As a young Sister of St. Joseph of Toronto, Sr. Helen Kluke discovered clay. After completing a degree in Studio Arts, she taught pottery to the elderly at Providence Health Care for three years before opening Studio on the Hill in 1996.

Fontbonne Ministries offers diverse programs that are welcoming and inclusive. The charity was founded in 2000 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto, a community of women who, through their compassionate presence, respond to various needs. Fontbonne Ministries continues, with the Sisters, their mission of reflecting the love of God and neighbour.
